Welcome to The Jeweller’s Market
About the Founder and TJM –
I think I’ve always loved gemstones. As a kid, I would walk around our garden and pick up pieces of quartz and imagine that I was finding diamonds. Not entirely impossible having grown up in South Africa, just highly unlikely to find them laying about in the garden. Then again, even if I had found one, I probably wouldn’t have known it because rough diamonds look nothing like the beautiful polished ones we see in rings and pendants. But I wasn’t going to let a bit of knowledge put my dreams on hold.
Fast forward 30 years and here I am dealing jewellery in one of the homes of jewellery around the world in Hatton Garden, London. And just as I did in my youth, I still love jewellery and gemstones but it’s not just for the way the stones sparkle or how the metals shine (although that’s pretty great) but for a deeper reason. I love it for the stories that jewellery tells.
On the surface, it would appear that people bought jewellery for the way that it looked and for the way that it made you look when you wear it. But it’s actually, for the way it makes you feel. On the most basic level, wearing beautiful jewellery makes you feel great. You put it on and twist and turn, watching how the stones catch the light, and you feel pretty (like a princess). Similarly, men look at their new Rolex Oyster Perpetual and feel powerful.
Even this is just scratching the surface of how jewellery touches our lives. Typically, we buy or receive jewellery to mark a special occasion. Engagements and weddings are the most obvious but also births, promotions, celebrating a special friendship and sometimes because a loved one has passed away. What makes that piece of jewellery special is not the size of the diamonds or the karats of gold but rather the story of how it came to you and remembering the people, places and moments that helped to make it so special for you.
Stories like these:
‘I have this necklace I always wear. I collect pendants from people I love; my best friends and members of my family have all given me one, and I put them on this chain so no matter where I am they’re always with me.’
‘I went on holiday and bought a necklace with the national stone only found in that country. I wear it every day as it brings back great memories from my first holiday abroad’
‘My boyfriend bought me a charm bracelet for my 18th birthday and for every special occasion he buys me a charm that reminds me of memories we have shared together’
This is why we truly love jewellery, those are the stories that we want to be a part of and is why we created The Jeweller’s Market, a place where you can come and find a treasured piece to help you celebrate your next special moment. So, when the time comes for you to start your story, we would be honoured to help you find something to store it in.
Because jewellery is meant to be worn and enjoyed.
